Plastic Bag Ban (Effective 1/1/2021)

Dear Clients of SKJ & Company, P.S.:

With the passage of Bill 5323, all Washington retailers are banned from using disposable plastic bags starting 1/1/2021. Below is the highlights of Bill 5323:

  • All disposable plastic bags are banned.

  • Only recyclable paper bags and reusable plastic bags are allowed for use.

    • Retailers must charge 8 cents per bag.

      • The price increases to 12 cents on 1/1/2026.

    • Retail Sales Tax still applies to sale of the bags.

    • Business & Occupation Tax does not apply.
